A senior official at the ministry said construction of sports facilities for girls has started at some government schools.
The official did not say when the first such sports facility would be ready.
Khashram Al-Khashram, assistant director of education in Hail province, said his department has awarded contracts worth SR140 million to establish 20 schools with sports facilities including six for girls.
In a recent statement, Education Minister Prince Faisal bin Abdullah emphasized the importance of sports for girls.
“Sports for girls is important, but they should be practiced in a way that conforms to the teachings of Islam,” Prince Faisal said.
The prince said his ministry would adhere to the principles of justice advocated by Islam, which did not discriminate between boys and girls or men and women.
“Girls’ health is our concern, and their sports should be within the bounds of the religion of Islam,” the prince said.
