Getting the start at designated hitter on the day his pal Derek Jeter was honored for reaching 3,000 hits, Posada laced a bases-loaded single off Jeremy Hellickson (10-8) in the second to give New York a 2-0 lead. He singled in the fourth then hit his 10th homer and 10th career slam in the fifth off Brandon Gomes .
In Seattle, Felix Hernandez pitched seven innings, surviving a shaky sixth, and Ichiro Suzuki hit the 34th leadoff homer of his career to lead Seattle.
Hernandez (11-10) was handed a five-run lead in the first inning but gave up four runs in the sixth on a pair of two-run homers by Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia .
Hernandez allowed nine hits and four runs. He walked two and struck out two.
Brandon League pitched the ninth to pick up his 28th save in 32 opportunities.
In Cleveland, Asdrubal Cabrera hit a three-run homer and Josh Tomlin pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning, leading the Indians to the victory.
Cabrera connected in the third, driving a 1-0 pitch from Brian Duensing (8-11) over the wall in left for his 20th homer. Shin-Soo Choo hit a leadoff single and Jason Donald walked before Cabrera went deep.
Tomlin (12-5) and four relievers combined for a five-hitter, with Chris Perez pitching a perfect ninth for his 25th save in 28 chances.
In Baltimore, Miguel Cabrera homered in a five-run sixth inning that featured six consecutive two-out hits, and the Tigers rallied to get the win.
Detroit trailed 5-0 in the second before mounting its biggest comeback of the season. The Tigers had previously battled back from a trio of three-run deficits.
Cabrera finished with three RBIs to help first-place Detroit maintain its three-game edge over Cleveland in the AL Central. Max Scherzer (12-7) picked up the win and Jose Valverde got three outs for his 35th save in 35 tries.
In Chicago, Paul Konerko hit a two-run homer, Tyler Flowers added his first career homer and the White Sox snapped a seven-game home losing streak.
Konerko went deep in the third and Flowers hit a solo shot in the fifth. Flowers also had a single and a walk.
Juan Pierre had three singles and scored two runs for Chicago. Jesse Crain (7-3) pitched 1 1-3 innings to get the win and Chris Sale worked the ninth for his fourth save.
In Toronto, Adam Lind hit a grand slam for Toronto, and Edwin Encarnacion and Mark Teahen also went deep.
All three homers came off Angels ace Jered Weaver (14-6), who allowed eight runs and eight hits, both season highs, in 4 2-3 innings, his shortest outing of the year.
The right-hander, who had won eight of his previous nine decisions, had his AL-leading ERA rise from 1.78 to 2.13. He was pitching for the first time since Aug. 5 after serving a six-game suspension for throwing over the head of Detroit’s Alex Avila in a July 31 loss.
In Oakland, California, Colby Lewis and four relievers combined on a five-hitter, leading Texas to the victory.
Ian Kinsler had two hits and three RBIs for Texas, which increased its AL West lead to three games over the Los Angeles Angels. Mike Napoli and Elvis Andrus hit run-scoring doubles off A’s starter Trevor Cahill as the Rangers (68-52) moved a season-best 16 games over .500 with their seventh consecutive victory over Oakland.
Jemile Weeks singled, doubled and tripled for Oakland, which committed four errors, had two wild pitches and lost for the seventh time in 11 games.
Posada caps return with slam and 6 RBIs
