Bamberg city spokeswoman Andrea Grodel said Monday that experts at the local museum are trying to determine the historical significance of the find.
The school was used as a hospital in the final days of World War II and Grodel says speculation is that the owners stuffed the peaked hats away, not wanting to be identified as Nazis as the Allies approached.
The badly damaged hats were part of Nazi party uniforms, and uniforms of the SA “storm troopers” — an early Nazi paramilitary force. Some carry the swastika emblem, others oak leaves or eagles.
The city is seeking any possible witnesses who might remember how the hats got there in 1945.
