Nearly 400 people gathered Wednesday morning outside the Turkish consulate in Irbil, the capital of Iraq’s self-ruled Kurdish region.
The protesters carried banners with slogans that said: “Stop the aggressive attacks on us,” and “We will not let Turkey’s internal problems destroy our lands.”
Since 1984, Turkey has been fighting the rebels of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, who use northern Iraq as a base for hit-and-run attacks on Turkish targets.
Last Sunday, seven Iraqi civilians were killed in a Turkish airstrikes on suspected rebel targets.
