Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi says Iran decided to manufacture carbon fiber domestically since it “faced challenges” in buying it on foreign markets because of international sanctions.
State-run IRNA news agency carried Vahidi’s announcement on Saturday.
Carbon fiber is extremely strong, light and flexible, with high tolerance for heat. It’s used in aerospace and civil engineering, and for military purposes.
Iran previously imported it for use in more advanced centrifuges, which spin uranium gas to produce enriched uranium. Highly enriched uranium can be used in a warhead.
