Alain Juppe said France is aiming to have a new UN Security Council resolution to “explicitly condemn the use of violence against the population and organize a sanctions regime.”
Juppe said Friday that “It’s a tough fight but we won’t give up.”
France and allies already want the Security Council to impose an arms embargo and other sanctions against Syria’s regime, but permanent member Russia is reluctant to go so far.
The United Nations estimates that 2,200 people have been killed in Syria’s crackdown on protests that erupted in mid-March.
