I am commenting this time on the writings of some good people of this country, including sheikhs and religious scholars who strongly criticized the system.
The people who initiated the project claim it is a good system that has curbed traffic accidents resulting from speeding to a great extent. They supported this claim with statistics.
I have no doubt that critics of the system listened only to feedback from people against the system and who complained about high fines, which automatically double after 30 days.
I would invite the critics to spend some time beside Saher cameras planted along major highways such as Al-Haramain Expressway, specifically between the Al-Jamea and Briman flyovers.
They will see reckless drivers endangering their own lives and those of others. They will then realize the importance of the Saher system.
From my personal experience I can safely say that most of these drivers who raise our blood pressure are on incomes less than what the middle classes receive. I can also say that the majority of them are poor, judging by the old cars they drive.
Many undisciplined drivers overtake others aggressively using the road’s shoulders, which are very narrow and not meant for cars. The distance they try to cover is not more than a few kilometers and the time they gain cannot exceed a minute or two in any circumstances.
I urge all critics of the system not to heed the complaints against fines. These drivers should not only be fined but imprisoned and whipped to stop endangering themselves and other road users.
