“The Complaints Committee of Municipal Elections canceled the results of the Electoral District-3 because of an error on the part of the committee supervising election procedures,” chairman of the committee Omar Al-Khouli told Arab News by telephone on Sunday, adding that the cancellation was not because of any violation committed by a candidate or voter.
Abdullah Al-Muhammadi, who polled 381 votes, was announced the winner in the district.
Al-Khouli said the error committed by the supervising committee involved the moving of the district’s polling center to a new location a few hours before voting started. The official said this confused many voters, who went to the old booth without knowing where the new polling location was.
On Sunday, the committee was contacted about the discrepancy.
Al-Khouli said the deadline for complaints ended on Sunday. Most of the allegations received by the committee so far are about violations of campaign regulations. The committee will examine all complaints received and make appropriate decisions within five days, Al-Khouli said, adding that most of the complainants did not furnish evidence to support their claims.
He added that many women citizens approached the committee demanding the cancellation of the election results, arguing that the election was void without the participation of women.
