These very high resolution LCD panels have been created to view art — both traditional masterpieces which have been digitized and the works of digital artists. Offering much higher resolution than a high definition television, Samsung claims that the SM’ART Gallery Panels can reproduce the original colors in the artworks, including texture.
The idea is that fine art connoisseurs would have a digital canvas that could change to any painting in a collection, depending on the mood or requirements of the occasion. Digital canvases could also be set up in multiple locations so that one painting could be put on display in several places. Samsung believes that this would be attractive for institutional art investors who would like to display their prize pieces safely at many venues or wealthy collectors who have several residences. Works of art could also be licensed for display on the SM’ART Gallery Panels.
“The Samsung SM’ART Gallery Panels will enable art buyers to transform a room of virtually any size into an easy-to-customize electronic gallery with any number of art pieces,” said Scott Birnbaum, vice president of new business development for Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.
Birnbaum said the digital approach could expand the creative boundaries of artistic expression on a grand scale. A Samsung SM’ART electronic gallery — in addition to transmitting art as originally created in static form — could spark considerable interest in art that moves, that changes based on the viewer’s mood or the time of day, and interactive art that reacts to movement.
