However, a court spokesman said his total time in prison cannot exceed 30 years.
The High Court on Thursday overturned a lower court’s acquittal and said Chen took $20 million worth of bribes from two banks in separate merger cases during his 2000-2008 presidency.
The lower court did not regard the money as bribes, noting the president has no say on mergers.
The 61-year-old Chen can appeal the latest ruling.
The main part of Chen’s sentence was handed down in September 2009. It relates to his conviction on charges of accepting some $9 million in bribes.
