Jose Perez Grau said 25 minutes of heavy rain inland of the town of Finestrat caused a torrent of water to rush downhill on Friday through the dip in which the market had been set up.
Stallholders and visitors were caught by surprise because it had not been raining in the town itself, Perez Grau said.
The couple’s ages were given Saturday as 70 and 72 but they were not identified. The regional newspaper Diario de Informacion said the couple had been on vacation in Benidorm, 12 kilometers (7 1/2 miles) east of Finestrat.
Five other people were injured.
