Dubai’s civil defense officials said the fire was believed to have been sparked by a gas cylinder explosion on a boat docked on Dubai Creek, which connects to the Gulf and is a main location for traditional trading vessels, known as dhows, that sail routes to other Gulf nations and along the East African coast.
The fire spread to another boat and threatened to engulf cargo holding areas before fire crews appeared on the scene. Thick smoke billowed from the site, which is near some of Dubai’s main business areas.
There was no immediate word on injuries.
