The kitchens that supply meals to pilgrims and tawafa establishments cooked and stored food in unhygienic surroundings.
Shouqiyah Municipality Chairman Mahab Ebada said several teams were sent to inspect restaurants and kitchens that prepare food for pilgrims.
"The municipality has taken necessary precautionary measures to avoid violations of regulation governing cooking and food supply to pilgrims. Our inspectors have seized a large quantity of food unfit for human consumption from many kitchens," the municipal chairman said.
The seized food included 290 cartons of chicken, 600 kilos of meat, 27 slaughtered animals, 140 bags of vegetable, fish, cooking oil, spices and fruit juice, flour and 2,000 kilos of rice in addition to 950 gallons of adulterated Zamzam.
Ninety-five pots in which the unhygienic meals were prepared were also seized.
He added that the violations included cooking and storing food in filthy areas by workers without health certificates, the official said.
