In Stockholm to collect her share of the €150,000 ($205,000) prize Monday, American midwifery educator Ina May Gaskin asked the Hungarian government to intervene to “stop the abuse and unjust treatment” of Agnes Gereb.
Gereb was sentenced in March to two years in prison for two separate home births, including one in which the baby died. Hungary has tight restrictions on home births.
Gaskin shared the award with human rights activist Jacqueline Moudeina of Chad and Spanish-based nonprofit GRAIN. Chinese solar power pioneer Huang Ming received an honorary award.
