Abdur Rashid, a 40-year-old convert to Islam who works for Walter Reed Army Medical Center, came up with the idea to raise money using his limbs and sweat last year after his daughter’s teacher asked parents to donate for a reading center while Abdur Rashid was in financial hardship and could not donate.
Last year he biked from College Park, Maryland to Alexandria, Virginia and back, raising $1,400 for Al-Huda School. This Saturday he plans on biking 376 km (235 miles) round trip (rain or shine) between Al-Huda School’s Maryland and Pennsylvania branches; he hopes to raise $20,000. All pledges are being collected directly by Al-Huda School.
A three-man support crew will accompany him during the trip, the longest ride ever attempted by the novice biker who commutes to work on his 12-speed.
