With the game tied 1-1, Brouwer got tangled with Rangers
defenseman Ryan McDonagh in front of the New York. Brouwer not only screened
goalie Martin Biron but redirected John Carlson’s drive from the left point for
his 10th goal of the season at 10:24.
Marcus Johansson also scored for the Capitals, who snapped a
two-game skid by beating the top team in the Eastern Conference. Alex Ovechkin
had two assists.
Brandon Dubinsky scored for the Rangers, 7-3 in their last
10 games. Marian Gaborik, tied for the NHL lead with 22 goals, had his run of
five straight games with a goal stopped.
Tomas Vokoun, making his first start in six games, made 31
saves for the victory.
In Glendale, Arizona, defenseman
Dennis Seidenberg scored 58 seconds into overtime to give lift Boston over
Phoenix.
Seidenberg’s shot from the middle of the rink at the blue
line, deflected off the stick of Coyotes defenseman Derek Morris and found its
way between the pads of goalie Jason LaBarbera. It was Boston’s first win after
regulation that wasn’t settled in a shootout.
The defending Stanley Cup champion Bruins have won 11 of 13
and 21 of 24 to move back on top of the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of
the New York Rangers. Phoenix, which has dropped three straight, has won only
three of 10.
David Krejci gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead 47 seconds into the
game on the team’s first shot. Ray Whitney tied it with 4:44 left in the first
period.
In Newark, Petr Sykora scored two goals
to lead New Jersey over Buffalo.
Zach Parise also scored for the Devils, who built a 3-0 lead
in the second period. Martin Brodeur made 22 saves and assisted on Sykora’s
first goal. Patrik Elias helped set up both of Sykora’s tallies.
Thomas Vanek scored for Buffalo, which received 20 saves
from Ryan Miller.
Luke Adam appeared to cut the Sabres’ deficit to 2-1 with a
deflection at 5:28 of the second period, but the goal was disallowed because
Adam struck the puck while his stick was above the crossbar.
Parise made it 3-0 at 6:55, and Vanek scored Buffalo’s lone
goal 1:14 later.
In Nashville, Colin Wilson scored
the only goal in the shootout, and Nashville sent Minnesota to its eighth
straight loss.
Jordin Tootoo scored for the Predators to give Nashville a
1-0 lead 7 minutes into the third period. Dany Heatley tied it for the Wild
with 3:59 remaining in regulation.
The Wild outshot the Predators 11-10 in the first period,
11-5 in the second and 35-25 overall. Minnesota, 0-5-3 since winning at Phoenix
on Dec. 10, had the only four shots in overtime.
In Chicago, Jonathan Quick made 38
saves to earn his NHL-leading fifth shutout, and Trent Hunter and Jarret Stoll
scored to lead Los Angeles past Chicago.
Quick was solid in earning his 19th NHL shutout, but he
wasn’t heavily tested until the third period.
The Kings improved to 5-1-1 in their last seven and 3-0-1
under coach Darryl Sutter, who took over behind the Los Angeles bench last
week. Sutter spent his eight-year NHL playing career with the Blackhawks, and
began his NHL coaching career with Chicago in 1992.
The Blackhawks, who lead the NHL with 50 points, where shut
out for the fourth time this season. Chicago is 9-2-1 in its last 12 and 13-3-3
at home.
Corey Crawford stopped 36 shots and was exceptional in his
third straight start following a string of six consecutive starts by backup Ray
Emery.
In San Jose, California, Andrew
Ebbett redirected Kevin Bieksa’s shot into the net at 3:23 of overtime to give
Vancouver a victory over San Jose.
Daniel Sedin and Ryan Kesler also scored for the Canucks,
who won their second straight and for the fifth time in six games. Roberto
Luongo made 33 saves and improved to 9-1-1 in his last 11 games.
Logan Couture and Joe Thornton scored for the Sharks, who
lost their second straight after a four-game winning streak. Antti Niemi
stopped 28 shots.
