Parliament's lower house is choosing 45 members of the 104-seat Senate in Friday's vote. By late afternoon, Zardari's Pakistan People's Party won 14 seats out of 30, with 15 yet to be announced — an expected result, given the PPP's lower house majority.
This means the PPP can keep a foothold in the Senate for the near future, as members sit for a six-year term.
Some rivals hoped that he would be ousted by a judge's ruling or even a coup before the Senate vote could be held.
