A poll by Focus agency for Slovak state television showed Smer winning 39.6 percent of the vote and taking 75 of the legislature’s 150 seats. The Christian Democrats (KDH) were second with 9.9 percent.
Another exit poll by agency MVK for private Markiza TV showed Smer with 37.3 percent and 69 seats. KDH was again seen as second with 10.8.
Led by former Prime Minister Robert Fico, Smer was expected to take about 40 percent of the vote in pre-election opinion surveys. If confirmed, the result would mean Fico would need a coalition partner to form a majority cabinet.
