“The carpentry and automobile workshops covering an area of 2,000 sq. meters were damaged in the fire. On receiving a call about the blaze, the Civil Defense sent 10 firefighting units, three teams of rescuers and first aid men in addition to Red Cross and police. Heavy equipment for rescue operations and water trucks were also rushed to the accident spot,” the spokesman of Makkah Civil Defense Lt. Col. Saeed Sarhan said in a statement to Arab News.
The bodies of the two men were found amid the charred debris of a workshop, he said. The bodies were moved to a hospital mortuary.
Many workers and customers trapped in the workshop buildings were also rescued. Police and Civil Defense are investigating the cause of the fire.
