Energy Minister Taner Yildiz says Turkey plans to purchase one million tons of oil from Libya this year, and also engage in spot oil purchases from Saudi Arabia. Turkey’s oil refinery, Tupras, said purchases from Iran were being reduced by 20 percent.
Friday’s decision comes a day after the US ambassador to Turkey called on the country to reduce Iranian petroleum purchases.
Major importers of Iranian oil could be hit with US penalties if they do not reduce purchases. Earlier this month, the United States exempted 10 EU countries and Japan from economic sanctions because they significantly reduced imports from Iran.
