Sony’s Creative Science Awards, described as the first initiative of its kind in the Kingdom, is an initiative launched in 2005 by Sony Gulf and MECL.
The award promotes students to create a scientific project based on a specific scientific principle, such as magnetism, gravity, buoyancy, etc.
Prince Mohamed said: “Our commitment to participate in supporting and discovering talents among Saudi students is part of our responsibility toward our community and country. We are continuously seeking to discover and develop those creative and talented boys and girls, and to empower the Saudi youth to create and show their innovations in the diversified fields of science and technology. They are the men and women of the future, who will be responsible for the development of this great nation.”
Kaz Makiyama, director of sales and marketing for Sony in Saudi Arabia, said: “More than 5,000 students have already benefited from the training sessions held during the last seven years. In the 2012 edition, almost 1,050 students benefited from practical training imparted to them to assist them in creating new methods for transforming theories into real world scientific inventions. We have also trained about 50 students from various charities in Riyadh. This year we have received about 150 projects from students of international schools.”
The Sony award aims to promote creativity and innovation among Saudi students, and transform their science learning into an enjoyable experience. In addition, the award seeks to develop the intellectual abilities among students and empower them to create scientific projects that are based on scientific principles through using simple tools.
The award is open to participation for students in the 9-15 year age group, based on the science curriculum in schools and scientific principles that promote creativity among them, taking into account that students in the age group represent about 45 percent of the Kingdom’s population.
