JEDDAH: A Saudi soldier was “martyred” on Tuesday in a land mine explosion in the kingdom’s southern border with Yemen, the Saudi Press Agency reported, quoting the spokesman of the Interior Ministry.
The soldier, identified as Hasan bin Husain bin Ahmed Al-Qaisai, a member of the Afwaj Security Forces, was carrying out his mission in support of a Border Guard patrol in the governorate of Aridhah, Jazan region, when he was hit in the explosion.
No further details were made available.
A number of Saudi soldiers and civilians have been killed in attacks across the border by Shiite Houthi rebels from Yemen.
Saudi Arabia and other members of a coalition, which include the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Jordan, are helping to restore the UN-recognized government of Yemen President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who had been forced to flee to the kingdom last year from rampaging Iran-backed Houthis and thugs loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh.
