RIYADH: The national program for the fight against drugs, Nebras, organized a symposium on “the scope of the drug problem and its harm” at the Special Forces headquarters in Riyadh recently.
More than 500 officials and Special Forces officers took part in the three-day symposium that started with a working paper presented by Nizar Al-Saleh, executive president of Nebras project and consultant at the secretariat of national committee for the fight against drugs.
Al-Saleh talked about the magnitude of the problem and means to face it, as well as about prevention and treatment.
He also presented the types of drugs that are most popular among the youth and pose a threat to them, showing important statistics. Al-Saleh said that much harm to health is caused by consuming Captagon, hashish, Zenax and Tramadol.
He stressed the need to create awareness about the pernicious effects of drugs among children and ensuring they do not fall victim to drugs and drug pushers.
He also presented Nebras’ objectives and its role in unifying the preventive efforts of all government organizations and their partners and supporters, foremost among them the Saudi company for basic industries SABIC.
Al-Saleh detailed the 8th Nebras plan of action, which includes programs educating children and their families, making use of all types of media, research, information about drugs, involving the National Committee for Narcotics Control (NCNC), as well as the Saudi observatory program.
He said these programs were prepared after analyzing best practices and methods to stop drug pushers; they open up new scopes of cooperation toward ending the menace of drugs in the Kingdom and creating a society well aware of the harmful effects of drugs.
Al-Saleh said that the project is given special importance and care by Crown Prince Mohammad bin Naif, deputy prime minister and minister of interior and chairman of the NCNC.
He said the project works to unify all efforts; it coordinates and supports the agencies working to create awareness and fight against drugs.
Nebras, he said, has been successfully operating since its launch in the month of Shaban last year. It has earned local, Arab and international appreciation, said Al-Saleh, thanking the secretary-general of the national committee for the fight against drugs, chairman of the board of directors of the Nibras project, Abdulilah bin Mohammad Al-Shareef, for the role and efforts made to advance the project’s goals as per the guardians’ wishes to protect society from drugs.
Col. Abdullah Al-Mandeel, chief of the armored division, said the Ministry of Interior plays a major role in protecting society from the menace of drugs and is keen to create awareness among all the segments of society.
Nebras “is seen as a salvation path for society and our country from this destructive menace”, he said.
