JEDDAH: A mission prepared by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) left for Myanmar to investigate the recent violence and human rights violations against Rohingya Muslims in the Rakhine region.
The mission will visit the capital Naypyidaw to meet with government representatives and from there proceed to villages in Rakhine (formerly Arakan) affected by the violence. The fact-finding mission will pave the way for a future visit by OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu.
A report based on their findings will be presented to the Myanmar Contact Group who will meet in New York as part of the United Nations General Assembly at the end of this month.
The decision to form a Myanmar contact group and to send a mission was made by the OIC executive committee and later adopted by the Islamic Solidarity Summit in Makkah last month.
