Plight of Rohingyas

This is in response to the story “Indonesia pledges $ 1m in aid to Myanmar’s Rakhine state.” While Rohingya Muslims were being killed, terrorized, looted and their properties being burned down by Buddhist extremists with the help of the Myanmar authorities, the whole world maintained a mysterious silence for quite a long time. Now some countries including the OIC, the UN and some NGOs have been cautiously working to provide humanitarian aid to the victims.
However, the security in Arakan (Rakhine state) is still not fully controlled by the Myanmar government and Rohingya Muslims are continuing to flee the country to save their lives. Some government officials are taking money from the Muslims to arrange boats for them to leave for Malaysia and Indonesia. No international media is allowed inside, therefore, the outside world is not able to get the real picture and the extent of destruction to human life and properties, the ongoing violence has caused to Rohingya Muslims. Some reports however claim that the situation is going to worsen in the coming days. Therefore, the only option with the UN is to send its security forces to the affected area and let international media get the sense of what is actually happening on the ground. — Mohammad Rauf, by e-mail
