RIYADH: A patrolling security officer and an alleged rioter were killed in a shootout in Qatif last night.
“First Class Private Hussein Ali Zabani of security patrol was killed and First Class Private Saad Miteb Muhammad Al-Shammari was wounded when they came under heavy fire from four armed rioters riding motorcycles at one of the intersections on Uhud Street in Qatif at 11 p.m. Friday evening,” Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki said in a statement.Al-Shammari was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The shooting occurred when security officers chased and tried to arrest four suspected rioters on motorcycles, Al-Turki said.
One of the wounded rioters succumbed to injuries while being taken to hospital, he added.
“Later, the security agencies received a call from the hospital that a man with bullet wounds was receiving treatment at the hospital. He turned out to be one of the rioters involved in the shooting of security men,” Al-Turki said. He said the incident is under investigation.
