Potential witness in Philippine massacre killed

MANILA: A prosecutor says a man who was fatally shot in February was a potential witness in the massacre of 57 people in the Philippines in 2009.
Nena Santos said Wednesday that police have established that the victim of the drive-by shooting was the same man prosecutors approached about testifying in the trial of a powerful political clan accused of orchestrating the killings of their rivals.
He was the latest of six witnesses, would-be witnesses and their relatives who have been gunned down since the massacre trial began in 2010.
Santos said the killings have sowed fear among other witnesses. Relatives of the 57 people who were slain after being stopped on a highway have criticized the slow pace of the trial.
