The presence of an estimated 40 percent of more than 1,000 cars impounded at Dammam Traffic car lot cannot be explained by authorities, a law enforcement source told a local newspaper.
Not only is there no record of who ordered the impoundment, there is also no record of the reason for impoundment. Some of the cars, the sources said, have been there for more than 20 years.
The same sources indicated that a committee made up of several official bodies and relevant parties will be created in order to look into the cases of cars seized by agencies other than the traffic administration.
The sources added that most of cars have become dilapidated and are taking up large spaces in the impound lots. This has led to a lack of space for new impoundments, which the administration then parks on the surrounding streets.
Those cars which are not identified are set to go to public auction.
“A lot of these cars are being stolen, especially since there is no lighting in the impound lots. Additionally, the vehicle impound yard at Dammam Traffic has been operating without electricity or an official electricity meter since its inception because it depends on electricity from a private company near the building,” the sources said.
