This refers to the editorial “Insuring for road safety” (Jan. 11). The editorial is very informative and really an eye opener. As a matter of fact, accidents, mishaps and injuries do take place everywhere but certain steps on part of authorities can curb the number of accidents and fatalities resulting from them.
The main reason for road accidents is the human error which can be avoided by putting in place proper road traffic system.
A system that ensures safe and secure conditions for driving as well as punishes the lawbreakers in a fair and transparent manner.
Road accidents take place due to lack of risk awareness, lack of safety aspects in design, lack of commitment to safety, lack of training and motivation, lack of discipline, lack of social responsibility in general and personal responsibility and accountability to safety in particular.
If these concerns are addressed properly there can be a significant improvement in the road safety in the Kingdom. — Anees Lokhande, Alkhobar
