Romania jails Israeli doctors for human egg trafficking

BUCHAREST: Four Israeli doctors were yesterday sentenced in absentia to five years in prison by a Romanian court for human egg trafficking.
The head of a Bucharest fertility clinic, Harry Mironescu, his son Yair Miron and two other gynaecologists were accused of violating legislation that makes it illegal to pay egg donors.
Prosecutors said the doctors paid donors 200 euros ($250) on average. They were found guilty of "human egg trafficking and setting up a criminal ring".
The recipients, mostly Israeli women, paid up to 15,000 euros for an in vitro fertilization, local media reported.
The secretary of the clinic, which closed down in July 2009, also received a five-year sentence for human egg trafficking.
