RIYADH: The trio of Johnson Sangcap, Marlon Adriano and Joseph Repollo powered KFH Rangers to a 78-68 win over Aziziah in Game 1 of the best-of-three championship series in the Siglakas International Riyadh South District Unity Cup Basketball Tournament 2012 at the Dunes Compound Filipino Community basketball court in Olaya Thalateen area here.
Both teams battled fiercely from the beginning though Aziziah took the biggest lead of 10 points in the initial period 23-13 thanks to Angel Bautista, Edison Bien, Raymond Gile, Ryan Reyes and Engelbert Josue.
Sangcap shot 32 big points and in collaboration with Adriano, Repollo, Hector Laurequez, Alfred Surio and Jolito Rosales helped the Rangers get back in the lead 40-39.
In the third quarter, the game was back and forth but the tight defense applied by Aziziah players after a timeout called by coach Willy Abdon opened the door for them to forge a four-point game, 58-54, at the close of the period.
But that was the best they could do as Rangers ace cager Sangcap came up with game-turning 3 three-point shots. The Rangers then proceeded to seal the game with 10 points margin of victory.
Ruben Sangcap coached the winning team and they will now for the clincher in today’s Game 2 at 5:30 p.m.
In the knockout battle for the third and fourth place, Cris Aborde’s Shemesy and Joel Crisostomo’s Industrial teams gave it their best shot in the game that ended in overtime 82-79 in favor of Shemesy. The game was just about even in intensity during the first three quarters as both camps, with Shemesy’s Cris Mangibin, Reniel Ebora, Andy Salubayba, Crisvin Aborde and Ver Daguplo at center stage, continued to exchange baskets which resulted in a series of deadlocks.
The winning team had led in each of the first three quarters at 17-13, 31-30 and 47-46.
The final period saw undermanned Industrial lead by 2 points 68-66 with under 8 seconds left. After a timeout with Shemesy in ball possession, Ebora hit the buzzer beater to send the game into overtime. In the extra period, Shemesy led by the duo of Mangibin and Ebora took control.
The tournament enjoys the generous support of Bukabin-Siglakas International Riyadh South District league advisers Armando C. Ortiz Sr., Felix A.
