RIYADH: Ambassador of Argentina to Saudi Arabia Jaime Sergio Cerda told Arab News yesterday that his country and Saudi Arabia share several common challenges as young nations.
Cerda made his observation yesterday prior to the Argentina’s National Day which is scheduled to be celebrated on May 25.
“We both share an interest in the Forum of the Dialogue of Civilizations and the Center for Interfaith and Intercultural Dialogue in Vienna, which will open in November,” he said.
On May 25, 1810, Argentina managed to form its first independent government and ended the colonial era. For this reason, we celebrate this date both at home and at all embassies that we are a free and independent country.
“We are a young country, with just over 200 years of history. For that reason, we can understand the debates going on in Saudi Arabia, given its recent unification in 1932. Beside this historical question, we also share several common challenges,” said the ambassador.
Both states want to achieve a level of development to ensure the prosperity of their citizens, now and in the future.
They share common views in international forums like the UN, similar positions in the G-20 and wish to deepen the new goals established by ASPA (Summit of South American-Arab Countries), whose next meeting is scheduled in Peru in September this year.
Cerda expressed his country’s appreciation for the Kingdom’s support on the issue of the Argentine Malvinas Islands.
