Dr. Ibrahim Alawi, medical director of Mental Health Hospital in Jeddah, said yesterday that the emergency department received 10 cases of domestic Ethiopian workers assaulting a number of nurses at King Fahd Hospital after being taken there by the Red Crescent on the request of their country's embassy.
He said in a statement to Al-Watan newspaper that the Ethiopian nationals were transferred to the hospital following an official letter from Jeddah police, pointing out that a medical team from the hospital dealt with providing them with necessary prescription medication before handing them over to police and their country's consulate.
He noted that two of them were hospitalized for severe mental disorders and agitation, adding that four cases are still in emergency and would be admitted to hospital later.
The hospital receives daily cases of runaway housemaids from their sponsors through security guards, the Red Crescent and Jeddah police. Some cases that have been transferred from deportation centers are treated and then procedures for their deportation go ahead.
Director of Health Affairs in Jeddah Dr. Sami Badawoud said the hospital doctors and hospital security authorities dealt with the 10 migrants and that it was obvious that they suffer from psychological and neurological disorders and must be calmed and controlled, calling the hospital security guards to help in moving them to a mental health institution. A further two were detained and eight cases were handed to the consulate representative.
