Work on KAFD back on track

Work at the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) has normalized, with the main contractors having recruited enough manpower to beef up their teams, according to a source at one of the KAFD’s supervisory and project management firms.
“Proof that work has normalized is the fact that the world-class convention center inside KAFD is almost finished. The finishing touches are currently being done,” the source told Arab News on Thursday.
Once finished, this world-class convention center, the source added, will be the venue of international conventions and summits attended by delegates from all over the world.
“Moreover, three well-known hotel brands have also signed contracts to operate and manage three hospitality facilities inside the KAFD. These chains include the Holiday Inn and Hotel Indigo,” he said.
However, the entire project will not be completed by the end of 2015 as previously forecasted, he said. Aside from the delay caused by the lack of manpower due to the crackdown last year on illegal workers, there are additional buildings to be constructed and packages that still have to be implemented.
He admitted that the delay was due to the crackdown on illegal foreign workers last year who were sent home as a result of the government nationalization scheme.
The summer heat further hampered productivity.
“Starting May, however, work on the project picked up, according to the main contractors we are dealing with. Their subcontractors were able to bring in workers to beef up their manpower,” he said.
The contractors include Saudi Bin Laden, El-Seif, Nesma, Al-Fanar, Saudi Constructioneer Co. (Saudico), SNC Lavalyn (Canadian firm), Envac, Saudi Ogei, Systra, Cityscape (for landscaping) and Al-Bawani.
The KAFD is being undertaken by the Rayadah Investment Corporation on behalf of the Kingdom’s Pension Authority. It consists of 34 towers spanning an area of 1.6 million sqm.
It will provide more than 3 million sqm of space for various use, 62,000 parking spaces and accommodation for 12,000 residents.
