An educational campaign has been launched to spread safety culture in Qatif, Ras Tanoura, Jubail and Al-Khafji targeting 5,000 farms. The campaign is being implemented by the Civil Defense jointly with the Ministry of Agriculture.
Col. Rashed Al-Mari, director of Civil Defense in Qatif, said farm fires are recurrent, with huge damages, especially if farms have agriculture waste.
The campaign aims to meet farmers, register their data and distribute educational material to them. It also aims to educate farmers about safety in workers’ accommodation, fencing farms and displaying a sign with the farmer’s name.
The farm should be cleaned from weeds and waste; during incineration the farmer or his representative should be present, the burning should be done at a depth of 1.5 meters, and at separate intervals and away from the surrounding farms.
“The campaign is implemented following the recommendation of the local council of the governorate and in cooperation with the Civil Defense in Al-Qatif,” said Abdullah Hamad Al-Faraj, director of the Ministry of Agriculture in the region.
In a related development, the damage inventory committee in Umm Al-Sahik continues with its field visits to farms that suffered damages caused by strong winds that hit the area last May. The committee notified farmers in Al-Qatif that it suspended its tours, without telling them about the future inspection dates.
