Saudi group in Dhaka to follow up on murder trial

The government of Bangladesh is fast-tracking the trial of four suspected murderers of a Saudi Embassy official. Saudi diplomat Khalaf Al-Ali, 45, was shot dead in Dhaka’s Gulshan area in the early hours of March 5.
A Saudi police delegation traveled to Bangladesh to meet with the director general of the Bangladesh police, the chief of Dhaka police and officers involved in the murder investigation. Interior Minister Shahara Khatun also met with the Saudi police delegation in Dhaka on Wednesday.
The Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdullah Al-Busairi was present to monitor developments in the investigation, the SPA reported.
The Saudi police delegation congratulated the government of Bangladesh for its successful efforts to catch the assassins.
“What we achieved in this case is the result of the special effort made by the Bangladeshi government and the repeated follow-up by Prime Minister Sheikh Haseena Wajid, with the Saudi Embassy,” said Interior Minister Khatun.
The police arrested four men in connection with the murder. One of the accused Al-Amin told the court, “He and the other defendants surrounded the diplomat and demanded money from him. When Al-Ali refused, one of the other men shot the diplomat and fled the scene.”
