“Our goal is safety” is the theme of the 29th Gulf Traffic Week that was inaugurated by Jeddah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Majed at Red Sea Mall on Sunday.
The aim of the week is to raise awareness of traffic rules so as to reduce the rate of accidents on Saudi roads.
Maj. Gen. Mohammed Hassan Al-Qahtani, director of the Jeddah Traffic Department, said lectures and seminars on safe driving will be held in schools, universities and at private companies by traffic officers as part of Traffic Week. According to Zaid Hamzi, spokesman for the department, 599 deaths and 3,800 injuries occurred on Kingdom's roads in 2012. The Traffic Department operates 24 programs aimed at road safety.
Also introduced at the opening ceremony was a “curtain” designed by Saudi students from Industrial Institute Jeddah to serve as a barrier between Saudi policemen and dust and strong winds.
