A 35-year-old Saudi woman died at Bisha General Hospital yesterday as a result of wrong transfusion of blood, Sabq electronic newspaper reported. The paper identified the victim as Zaraa Eissa Muhammad Faqeeh.
According to Zaraa’s relatives, she was admitted to the hospital on Oct. 12, 2012 for sickle cell anemia, rheumatism and diabetes. She was given wrong blood (Group A instead of O) during treatment, said her brother Ahmed.
Ahmed said the doctor, who was treating Zaraa, had asked hospital authorities to shift her to King Fahd Central Hospital intensive care, but the Bisha Hospital director approved her transfer only after two days. By that time her condition had deteriorated.
Even after reaching King Fahd Hospital, Zaraa was taken to the intensive care unit after eight hours, making her condition worse. Ahmed said he has filed a petition to the health department in Bisha to take action against the erring doctor and nurse.
