Saudi importer fined for selling expired medication

The administrative court in Jeddah sentenced a Saudi businessman, specializing in importing medication, and his private foreign driver to a fine of SR 100,000 each for selling expired medication, local daily Al-Madinah reported yesterday.
The charges presented to the court by the Control and Investigations Board accused the businessman of deliberately marketing expired medication and medical equipment found in his possession by the Committee to Combat Trade Fraud and the Saudi Food and Drug Authority.
The court heard expired medications and equipment found in warehouses owned by the businessman consisted of injections, toothpaste and dental filling material.
The businessman, whose name was not revealed, was also accused of having more than one expiry date on some of the goods, while others had no expiry date and no Arabic description on the medication.
The businessman's foreign driver told the judge he works as a private driver for the businessman who is also his sponsor and that he had nothing to do with the expired goods. The judge replied he was caught inside the warehouse not while driving outside.
