LOS ANGELES: Captain Dustin Brown scored two goals and Jonathan Quick made 23 saves as the surging Los Angeles Kings beat Calgary 3-1 on Monday night for their second win over the Flames in three days.
Brown and Jarret Stoll scored first-period goals before Brown added an empty-netter for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who moved up to third place in the Western Conference with their 11th win in 14 games. Despite a rough third period dominated by Calgary, the champs finished their five-game homestand with four victories. With steadily improving play after a rough start to the season, Los Angeles trails only Chicago and Anaheim in the West race.
Mikael Backlund ruined Quick’s shutout bid with 5:22 to play for last-place Calgary, which has lost six straight on the road.
Bruins 3 Senators 2: In Ottawa, Ontario, David Krejci scored the shootout winner and had an assist in regulation as the Boston Bruins defeated the Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Monday night.
Tuuka Rask made 30 saves in regulation and stopped three of four Senators in the shootout, including a bizarre attempt from Kaspars Daugavins.
The Ottawa forward carried the puck by pressing down with the tip of his stick before attempting a failed 360 move in front of Rask.
Shawn Thornton and Daniel Paille scored for Boston, which rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win its 10th straight in Ottawa.
Guillaume Latendresse — in his first game back from injury since Jan. 30 — and Kyle Turris scored in regulation for the Senators. Robin Lehner made 33 saves through three periods and overtime.
Coyotes sign Samuelsson to 3-year contract
In Glendale, Arizona, the Phoenix Coyotes have signed forward Henrik Samuelsson, their first-round draft pick last year, to a three-year entry-level contract.
Coyotes general manager Don Maloney announced the signing Monday, but didn’t disclose financial details.
The 19-year-old Samuelsson is from Scottsdale and is the son of former NHL defenseman and ex-Coyotes assistant coach Ulf Samuelsson.
He has been playing for the Western Hockey League’s Edmonton Oil Kings and has 32 goals and 47 assists in 67 games this season. He currently ranks third on the team in goals and points.
Samuelson also played for the Oil Kings and Modo Hockey Ornskoldsvik of the Swedish Elite League and was the 27th overall pick in the 2012 NHL draft by Phoenix.
