Penguins in thrilling win over Canadiens

MONTREAL: Pittsburgh’s Brandon Sutter scored his second goal of the game 52 seconds into overtime to give the Penguins a breathless 7-6 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, and a three-point lead atop the NHL’s Atlantic Division.
Sutter took a pass from Simon Despres on a rush, stepped around an opponent and beat the goalie with a high shot.
In other key games, Phoenix beat Anaheim in a shootout, Philadelphia downed Ottawa, Boston came from two goals down to beat Tampa Bay and win its sixth straight, and Vancouver scored five to beat Los Angeles.
Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke and Chris Kunitz, both netted two goals, and Sidney Crosby also scored for the Penguins.
Brian Gionta had a pair of goals, and Brandon Prust, Pacioretty, David Desharnais and P.K. Subban also scored as Montreal stretched its string of games without a regulation loss to 10.
The Canadiens failed to get a win for coach Michel Therrien in his first game against the Penguins since he was fired as their coach in 2009.
Montreal outshot Pittsburgh 39-26 in a wide-open game with shaky goaltending at both ends.
Phoenix’s Steve Sullivan scored the tying goal with 6:28 remaining in regulation and then netted the lone goal in the shootout to lift the Coyotes to a 5-4 win over the Anaheim Ducks.
Lauri Korpikoski scored twice, Matthew Lombardi added a goal, and Mike Smith stopped 31 shots through overtime and then all three shootout attempts for the Coyotes.
Andrew Cogliano had three goals for his second NHL hat trick, and Saku Koivu added a goal and an assist for the Ducks.
Philadelphia’s Jakub Voracek and Wayne Simmonds scored and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 33 shots as the Flyers beat the Ottawa Senators 2-1.
The win gave the Flyers a .500 record for the first time this season, at 11-11-1.
Marc Methot scored for the Senators, who lost in regulation for the first time since Feb. 16.
Boston’s Brad Marchand scored a tiebreaking goal on the power play with 2:16 left in the third period, completing the Bruins’ comeback from a two-goal deficit to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 and extend their winning streak to six.
Marchand 11th goal of the season came late in a double high-sticking penalty to Brendan Mikkelson. It was the second power-play goal of the game for the Bruins, who hadn’t scored at home with a man advantage before Saturday.
Tyler Seguin also scored on the power play for the Bruins 3:22 into the second period, pulling Boston within 2-1. Rich Peverley tied it 1:17 later. Patrice Bergeron and Marchand broke free for a 2-on-1 late in the third for the tiebreaking goal.
Steven Stamkos and Alexander Killorn scored for Tampa Bay, both on power plays in the first period.
Vancouver’s Daniel Sedin and Jannik Hansen scored 2:44 apart late in the second period to help the Canucks down the Los Angeles Kings 5-2.
Dan Hamhuis, Mason Raymond also scored, and Chris Higgins added an empty-net goal for Vancouver.
Justin Williams and Jordan Nolan scored for Los Angeles, which had its five-game winning streak end.
San Jose’s Dan Boyle and Joe Pavelski got the struggling power-play unit going with goals that helped the Sharks beat the Nashville Predators 2-1.
Buffalo’s Jason Pominville scored twice in regulation and added a shootout goal as the Sabres extended their winning streak to three games by beating the New Jersey Devils 4-3.
Carolina’s Jussi Jokinen scored twice and added an assist, and Riley Nash netted his first goal as the Hurricanes recorded a 6-2 win over the Florida Panthers.
Washington’s Braden Holtby stopped 35 shots and Mike Ribeiro had a goal and an assist as the Capitals won 3-0 at the Winnipeg Jets.
