NEW YORK: New York’s Nick Swisher hit a grand slam and drove in five runs to power the Yankees to an 8-2 win over the Texas Rangers in Monday’s meeting of American League divisional leaders.
Swisher’s second slam this season was his 200th career homer. Eric Chavez also homered off Ryan Dempster (1-1), who matched a season worst by allowing eight runs. In three starts since coming to Texas from the Chicago Cubs, Dempster has allowed 19 runs in 17 1-3 innings.
David Phelps (3-3), starting in place of injured ace C.C. Sabathia, picked off two runners and pitched a career-high five innings for the win. New York has won six straight against Texas at home.
New York’s new signing Derek Lowe closed with four scoreless innings in his Yankees debut.
Blue Jays 3, White Sox 2, 11 innings: In Toronto, David Cooper singled home the winning run in the 11th inning as Toronto beat Chicago.
In the 11th, Leyson Septimo (0-2) came on to pitch with one out and walked Kelly Johnson on four pitches, After another change on the mound, Edwin Encarnacion singled to move Johnson to third. Cooper followed with a liner that bounced just in front of the onrushing right fielder, scoring Johnson easily.
Toronto’s Steve Delabar (3-1) struck out six batters in two innings to earn the win.
Chicago’s Adam Dunn hit two home runs, including a game-tying shot in the ninth inning, boosting his major league-leading total to 33.
Rays 4, Mariners 1: In Seattle, B.J. Upton hit a two-run home as Tampa Bay downed Seattle and notched its seventh straight win.
Rays starter Alex Cobb (7-8) allowed only one run in seven innings, striking out five. His ERA over his past four outings is 1.93.
Seattle’s Blake Beavan (7-7) pitched six innings, allowing all four earned runs in the third inning.
Indians 6 Angels 2: In Anaheim, Justin Masterson held Los Angeles scoreless into the seventh inning as Cleveland began its 10-game road trip with a win.
Masterson (9-10) is 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA in seven career starts against the Angels, the lowest mark of any pitcher with at least five starts against them.
Brent Lillibridge homered off All-Star lefty C.J. Wilson (9-9), who dropped his fifth straight decision. Wilson allowed three runs in 6 2-3 innings.
Twins 9 Tigers 3: At Minneapolis, Darin Mastroianni and Ryan Doumit both homered and drove in three runs as Minnesota beat Detroit.
Doumit broke it open with a three-run homer that made it 8-1 in the seventh.
Twins starter Samuel Deduno (4-0) baffled struggling Detroit for seven innings, striking out six and remaining undefeated in seven career starts.
Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez (1-3) was hit in the knee by a grounder in the first, but stayed in the game. He allowed five runs over % 1-3 innings. He has an 8.41 ERA since being acquired in a trade with Florida on July 23. Detroit has lost five of six.
