The collapse of scaffolds holding a portion of the Tahliya flyover, being constructed at the intersection of Prince Majed and Prince Muhammad streets, would not affect the bridge at all, said a spokesman of Jeddah Mayoralty yesterday.
“Eighteen of the 20 pieces of the bridge have already been installed. What is remaining is fixing the 19th and 20th pieces,” said Dr. Abdul Aziz Al-Nahari. He said the mayoralty has asked the contractor to replace the 19th piece that was damaged as a result of the collapse.
Jeddah Mayor Dr. Hani bin Muhammad Aburas, accompanied by municipal and company engineers, visited the accident site on Friday and said it was fortunate that nobody was killed or injured.
“The collapse of one portion has not affected the remaining parts of the bridge. An investigation committee will examine all the reasons that caused the collapse and will prepare a report in the coming days,” he said.
Head of the committee Ibrahim Kutubkhana, deputy mayor for construction and projects, said the bridge consisted of 20 prefabricated pieces that have been installed and linked to one another.
