Team B wins SPTC 20th Anniversary tourney

Team B showed complete domination of their opponents when they won the championship match without losing a set against a fighting Team D in the finals of the SPTC 20th Anniversary Tournament held recently at the King Abdul Aziz University tennis courts in Jamea District here.
Starting the onslaught for Team B were partners Romy Sorra and Darrell Eltagonde who avenged their elimination round defeat to Kris Temblique-Oca Lovitos by nailing the first set victory at 8-4. Then came the Choy Argarin-Marlon Pagsanjan tandem who blew a 7-4 lead to narrowly win on tiebreak 8-7 against Tahir Suryadi-Erwan Nulawis. The crucial hird set was a see-saw battle as both pairs held serve until team B’s Mario Betorio-Roy Timtiman broke their opponents Ben Micu-Hamza Rik Maulion’s service game to take the lead at 5-4 and continued from here to take the set at 8-5 and together with it was the match at 3-0 and the championship. With nothing at stake but prestige, the fourth set was played and won by team B’s Chet Bautista-Mario Betorio at 8-3 against Lama Pamulang-Haji Pilongo to complete the 4-0 sweep.
The single round-robin eliminations round was topped by Team B with wins over Team C (2-26/2-20) and Team D (3-27/1-25) and a loss to Team A (2-20/2-28), while Team D won over Teams A (3-29/1-24) and C (3-31/1-24) but lost to Team B (1-25/3-27) and with the win-over the other rule relegated team D to second spot after the eliminations leading the two teams to vie for the championship.
This month-long tournament was organized by the Samahang Pinoy Tennis Club (SPTC) to celebrate its 20th founding anniversary through the efforts of the SPTC 2012 officers headed by Chairman Ali Callanta, Vice Chair Lito Bentulan, Treasurer Marlon Pagsanjan and Tournament Director Oca Lovitos. Also part of the celebration was the presentation of special achievement award plaques to five previous chairmen of the club who through the years have continued to give valuable support to the club’s endeavors namely Gary Bautro, Cesar Pabico, Rading Bautista, Nestor Sandoval and Chet Bautista.
