Allegations that railway track theft was responsible for the derailment of the Dammam-Riyadh passenger train on 27 June were unfounded. An investigation into the accident concluded this. “Not a single nail was stolen from the railway track,” an anonymous source told business daily Al-Eqtisadiah on Monday.
The source confirmed no theft or interference of any kind happened on the track as some incorrectly alleged. “It is believed technical reasons may be behind the accident. “However, this is the responsibility of the technical committee to determine.”
The train was on a run from Damman to Riyadh with 332 passengers onboard. It derailed and overturned nearly 80 kilometers from Riyadh. 35 passengers were injured, two of them seriously. The Saudi Railway Organization (SRO) used bus and aircraft to transport the injured to hospitals in Riyadh. There were no deaths and the injured were later discharged.
