This refers to the letter by Sameena, “Technology of safety,” published in Arab News on March 8, that says women can now use smart phones technology to alert police on any attempt of molestation or rape.
It is indeed good news for those working women in the metropolitan cities, who can afford smart phones. However the vast number of those women in small towns and villages who often face threats and incidents of harassment will not be able to avail themselves of any benefit from such technology.
In contrast to the hue and cry that was raised against the rape and murder of a medical student in New Delhi, the rape and murder of three minor sisters in a village of Bhandara in Maharashtra was just reported as a news item and the nation more or less remained quiet on this gruesome crime with the crime.
Police too remained relatively cold in nabbing the culprits; and since it happened in a small village, there are attempts now to change the facts probably to let the suspects get away.
This highlights the difference in the approach toward crimes occurring in urban and the ones happening in rural areas. Even media focuses its attention on incidents of crimes in cities and towns and crime against women in smaller villages are just reported as sideline news. — Safi H. Jannaty, Dammam
