With reference to Zaka Syed’s article, “Battling phantoms in Pakistan and Bangladesh,” (March 10), I think this is purely a political ploy to grab power by manipulating issues that may not be relevant for the masses.
The tragedy of Bangladesh’s political scenario is a clear divide between ‘Islamist’ and ‘Leftist’ that should be exposed and named openly, publicly and courageously. Now that Awami League is facing a new election and is not sure of coming back to power, it is taking steps to ensure that the election process gets derailed. Awami League does not want a caretaker to oversee the elections. The ruling party is in cahoots with India and the Jewish planners in America to frustrate democratic elections. All these conspirators know that the Awami League risks losing the elections and hence are not willing to take any chance. But Prime Minister Shaikh Hasina Wajed is perhaps oblivious of the fact that in such a delicate situation, even a single event of conviction or assassination — like taking any immature decision on Prof. Ghulam Azam, for instance — may trigger an unprecedented cycle of violence that would have its ramifications as far as in India. In that case the democratic process in the country would come to a halt and chances are that the disgruntled elements belonging to the opposition may turn to violence ultimately landing up in India with all the consequences that are too well known to be recalled that too at a time when elections are round the corner.
And if all that which is going on in Bangladesh is part of a strategy that involves India then it is surely playing a very risking and a very dangerous game.
Let the real issues facing Bangladesh become known to the world so that India and other countries understand the truth behind media propaganda against Jamaat-e-Islami. The trials are political, the procedures are political, the abuse of legislation to change the terms of prosecution at this eleventh hour is political. — Ghulam Muhammad, Mumbai
