Undisputed leader

It was interesting to know from Farouk Luqman’s column “Sonia Gandhi: Undisputed leader of Congress party” that the most powerful Indian lady and the present Congress President Sonia Gandhi first met Rajiv Gandhi in Cambridge during his tenure at university while she was learning English and earning a living by working in a restaurant. On his insistence and obvious love she agreed to marry him and came to India with him without knowing that she would one day become the president of the prestigious Indian political party “Congress” and lead the world’s largest democracy of 1.2 billion people.
After her husband Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination she was in a state of shock and dilemma for a long span of time and maintained distance from politics, but eventually she jumped in the political field and became a most successful and popular leader. She seems to be a decent lady who gave excellent and exemplary education and training to her children, who seems to be very simple and maintain high virtues with dignity.
Certainly, she is a talented and wise lady with a number of extra ordinary capabilities and best qualities. Her several decisions in the Indian politics are remarkable and historic, she is undoubtedly an undisputed leader of the congress party as written by the author. She confronted many challenges and witnessed many ups and downs in the political scenario and managed well thoughtfully.
Apart from her other best decisions, one of the best decisions was to decline the premiership and choose Manmohan Singh as the prime minister. She was of course right to do so as Singh has proven to be one of the finest leaders of post-independence India. Interestingly he is the first minority community member to hold this top most position as the prime minister.
I thank Farouk Luqman for the nice and interesting article. Please keep it up! — Zakaria Sultan, Riyadh
