Water in Ramadan (Part 3)

Here I am again with more on water as promised, not just for Ramadan but also for “life.” This time, I shall expose to you the perspective of an expert on water, Dr. F. Batmanghelidj. He has done extensive research on the effects of water on the human body and written several books on the subject. Last week, I introduced him to you, but today I will elaborate on how plain water can become a miraculous cure as well as a protection to the body and brain cells to prevent seemingly ‘untreatable’ diseases.
Dr. B. strongly stated in an interview with NaturalNews’ editor, Mike Adams that, “…Nothing substitutes for water — not a thing. No drink — no coffee, no tea, no alcoholic beverages. Not even fruit juices.” He explained that water produces different effects on the cells, organs and systems than other drinks. It directly targets their nourishment. Therefore, the body requires a continuous supply of pure fresh water to complete certain functions that cannot be done by adulterated waters like caffeine, soda, energy and sweetened beverages and alcohol in particular. Not even fresh fruit juices can perform such delicate tasks, especially when it comes to quenching body and brain cells.
As I explained in my previous articles, the body is mostly composed of water, over 70 percent. So, when it is deprived of its daily supply of this essential element, the organs, cells, systems, body and brain start manifesting imbalances depending on the body weakness or genetic disposition. Our organs are bathed in fluids, in other words, water. The eyes need tears to lubricate them; when dry, they become irritated and develop infections. The respiratory system is lined with fine mucus; when thickened with dehydration, it blocks the airways and attracts bacteria. When the mouth is dry, it emits a foul smell. With little water, the urine becomes concentrated with toxins and bacteria. The digestive tract takes a toll, too, due to water shortage, resulting in poor nutrient assimilation, heartburn, abdominal pains, indigestion, constipation, hemorrhoids, etc... The brain and other systems suffer as well in different ways. I shall explore all that and more from Dr. B.’s perspective and research.
Allow me to go back to Dr. B.’s interview. The amazing part is that he successfully treats individuals with abdominal pains with two glasses of plain water at first. Within three minutes, the “excruciating pain” begins to subside and eight minutes later, it vanishes, relieving the sufferer. He then prescribes two glasses of water every three hours to his patients and “That was the end of ulcer pain.” He continued saying, “And water proved to be an effective medication.”
From personal experience, I have seen first hand somebody, who suffered for years from heartburn, acid reflux, constipation and hemorrhoids, get cured, just by increasing the daily water intake to meet the body needs. Off the shelf medication and prescription drugs did not work, but water brought back equilibrium to the digestive tract. That was around ten years ago.
The body reacts to dehydration in different ways. The body feels lethargic and tired, sapped of energy especially after a long day of water deprivation. After a night’s sleep of no water, people find difficulty leaving their beds in the morning. They become irritable and angry and feel low and even depressed. The brain too feels the drought as Dr. B. explained. The memory starts declining and disorientation takes place. Water empowers hydro electrical signaling and neurotransmitters in order to transmit information throughout the body, heart and brain. Two glasses of room temperature or warm water on an empty stomach in the morning can relieve many of the above symptoms. By the way, the Chinese sip hot water (never cold) during meals. I find it digestive.
He added that, with water deficiency, other symptoms like “allergies, hypertension, diabetes and also immune diseases” appear. The hormone histamine kicks in and rushes through the body to regulate the hydraulic system, drawing water from less needed areas to supply the more essential systems. He explained that, “The system that regulates water balance of the body suppresses the immune system [because it is energy-consuming]. Then you get asthma” or other allergy related disorders. The dryness of the airways and thickened mucus along with the histamine rush cause the bronchial tubes to go into spasms and asthma sets in. Water is our natural anti-histamine that counteracts allergic reactions and clears allergens from the body. Water deficiency symptoms come in other forms like heartburn, indigestion, constipation, hemorrhoids, hypertension, rheumatoid joint pain, backache, migraine, fibromyalgia, colitis, angina attack and more.
The blood vessels have elastic properties, meaning they shrink and expand according to the state of hydration or dehydration. When they are dehydrated they become hypertensive, but “If people drank water on a regular basis and took enough salt and minerals to expand the capillary beds, [Dr. B. said], hypertension would disappear completely.” Moreover with hypertension, the heart is forced to pump harder to circulate blood in the cardiovascular system, keeping in mind that blood also becomes thicker and slower to flow and starts making clots that obstruct the blood vessels.
Other research showed that water intake first thing in the early morning prevents fatal heart attacks and strokes, which usually occur between 6 a.m. and midday, probably due to overnight dehydration and stillness of the body. Apparently, drinking water and having early breakfast can prevent such occurrences.
Body and brain cells and tissue also suffer from water deficiency. They undergo structural changes and shrinking. Dr. B. compared them to fresh and dried fruits as he stated that, “Prune-like cells do not function in the same manner as a plum-like cell.” Chronic dehydration suppresses the immune system and causes some of the cells to turn cancerous. If the condition persists the mutated cells take over in the specific system.
Since Dr. B. had more to say about the necessity of water and the dangers of dehydration to health and life, I decided to discuss the other important information about water next week, inshallah. I hope the last couple of articles are convincing enough to make you remember to hydrate your body sufficiently with plain water during iftar, breaking fast time. It also helps you regulate your body temperature during the summer heat and physical training. Please keep in mind “water is for life.”
