KARACHI, 16 April — The authorities banned protest demonstrations, marches and sit-ins to prevent political activists from continuing agitation in the provinces of Sindh and Punjab and pre-empt plans by the multi-party Alliance for Restoration of Democracy to hold a rally on May 1.
A government announcement said the decision, taken on Saturday, was aimed at maintaining peace. It said agitation and demonstrations damaged investors’ confidence. The government cannot allow anyone to disturb peace in cities like Karachi where port and banking activities are easily disrupted.
An official spokesman said that restrictions had been placed on the assembly of five or more people in open places. The restrictions which have come into effect immediately will continue till July. The decision drew flak from major political parties.
